Building a Skincare Routine

Also known as skincare basics, routine building

Four products do 90% of the work. Everything beyond that is refinement, and most of it is marketing.

Evidence
Very strong
Typical cost
$40 – $80
Permanence
Ongoing use
Timeline
Barrier improvement in 2–4 weeks. Active-driven change over 12 weeks to 6 months.

A complete effective routine: $40–80 total, lasting 2–3 months.

How it works

An effective routine does three things: cleanses without stripping the acid mantle, supports the barrier with humectants and lipids, protects against UV, and applies one or two evidence-backed actives. Adding more products increases irritation risk and makes it impossible to identify what is helping.

How it's used

Morning: gentle cleanser, moisturiser, broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Evening: gentle cleanser, an active (retinoid most nights), moisturiser. Introduce one new product at a time and give it six weeks before judging. If the skin is irritated, remove products rather than adding a soothing one.

Trade-offs

In favour

  • Cheap — a complete effective routine costs under $60
  • Simple enough to actually maintain
  • Easy to diagnose problems when the routine is short
  • Covers the great majority of achievable benefit

Against

  • Requires patience and consistency
  • Boring compared with elaborate multi-step routines
  • Results are gradual

Risks and side effects

Read before deciding
  • Over-exfoliation and barrier damage from stacking too many actives
  • Fragrance and essential oils are common irritants
  • Skipping SPF while using a retinoid actively worsens pigmentation

How good is the evidence?

Very strong
Extensive high-quality evidence and guideline support.

The individual components — cleansing, moisturising, photoprotection, retinoids — each have strong evidence. Elaborate multi-step routines do not.

Sources

Sources point to guideline bodies and literature searches rather than single papers, so they stay accurate as the evidence moves.
