RF Microneedling

Also known as Morpheus8, radiofrequency microneedling

Needles plus radiofrequency heat to tighten skin and improve scarring. The best non-surgical option for mild laxity.

Permanence
Long-term
Timeline
Collagen remodelling continues for 3–6 months after the final session.

US $500–1,500 per session, typically 3 sessions.

How it works

Insulated microneedles penetrate to a set depth and deliver radiofrequency energy into the dermis. The controlled thermal injury triggers neocollagenesis and collagen contraction while the epidermis is largely spared, which is why downtime is short relative to ablative lasers.

How it's used

Typically three sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Depth is adjusted by area. Effective for acne scarring, texture and mild jawline laxity. Manage expectations — it is not a facelift, and marketing that suggests otherwise is dishonest.

Trade-offs

In favour

  • Meaningful improvement in acne scarring and texture
  • Safe across all skin tones, unlike many lasers
  • Short downtime
  • Some genuine skin tightening

Against

  • Multiple sessions needed
  • Results are modest compared with surgery
  • Uncomfortable even with numbing cream
  • Can cause fat loss if set too deep on thin faces

Risks and side effects

Read before deciding
  • Subcutaneous fat atrophy from excessive depth or energy — a real and under-discussed risk on slim faces
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Prolonged redness and swelling
  • Tracking marks or grid patterning
  • Infection and, rarely, scarring

Recovery

Days 1–3: redness resembling sunburn, swelling, sandpaper texture. Days 4–7: flaking and return to normal appearance. Makeup usually acceptable from day 2–3.

How good is the evidence?

Strong
Good trial evidence with consistent findings.

Good evidence for acne scarring and texture; evidence for significant skin tightening is weaker than marketing implies.

Sources

Sources point to guideline bodies and literature searches rather than single papers, so they stay accurate as the evidence moves.
