How it works
High-glycemic foods raise insulin and IGF-1, which increase sebum production and androgen activity — both drivers of acne. Milk contains bioactive hormones and whey proteins that further raise IGF-1, which is why skim milk shows a stronger association than full fat in observational studies. Whey protein supplements have been repeatedly linked to acne flares for the same reason.
How it's used
If you have persistent acne, run a genuine 8–12 week trial: reduce high-glycemic foods and trial removing milk and whey protein specifically. Photograph weekly under consistent lighting. Note that diet is a modifier, not the cause — it will not replace a retinoid or isotretinoin in moderate to severe acne.

- Unnecessary elimination diets can cause nutritional gaps — dairy removal without calcium replacement
- Orthorexic patterns are a genuine risk in appearance-focused communities
- Delaying effective medical treatment while experimenting with diet

Consistent observational associations and some randomised evidence for low-glycemic diets. Dairy evidence is largely observational.
